Portantino gets $250,000 for Armenian school and kindergarten in Pasadena – Public Radio of Armenia


California State Sen. Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) announced Wednesday that his $250,000 budget request for Levon & Hasmig Tavlian Preschool & Kindergarten in Pasadena has been approved by the Legislative Assembly. The funds will help with renovation projects, the STEAM enrichment program and technology upgrades, Asbarez reports.

“I am thrilled to have secured financial support for Tavlian Preschool & Kindergarten,” Senator Portantino said. “This is a significant investment in education that will benefit the Tavlian community and, most importantly, the students. I look forward to seeing this wonderful place continue to care for our children and ensure their academic success. After seeing the smiles on the faces and the wonder in the eyes of its students, who wouldn’t want to support this wonderful kindergarten? »

Senator Portantino, who represents the 25th Senate District, has been a close friend of the Armenian American community and a champion of the Armenian cause since his election to public office. He spearheaded the creation of the Senate Select Committee on Mutual Trade, Artistic and Cultural Exchange between California, Armenia and Artsakh and is currently its Chairman.

The senator has traveled to Armenia and Artsakh several times and recently led efforts to establish a California-Armenia trade office in Yerevan. He authored countless laws and resolutions recognizing the Armenian Genocide and was a strong supporter of the inclusion of the Armenian Genocide in the state curriculum.

California has the largest population of Armenian Americans in the United States, with the 25th Senate District having the largest concentration of Diaspora Armenians.

L. & H. Tavlian Preschool & Kindergarten was established in 1992 in Pasadena, California. The school held its first semester and class instructions with four students. Since its inception 30 years ago, Tavlian has graduated nearly 2,000 students. The school is licensed by the State of California and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Tavlian Preschool and Kindergarten offers a developmentally appropriate one-day program for children ages two to five. Currently, the school enrolls 70 students with 16 faculty and staff.
