Some History About WJIL - Remeber When?

Red Thompson was born Marion Francis Thompson, the son of Herman and Jennie Jones Thompson in Pulaski, Illinois. He came by the nickname "Red" naturally, due to his red hair.  Red was a well known in the community and the surrounding area for his folk music.

During his career, Red worked with Fred Oliver's group, the Prairie Pioneers when they were at another local radio station.

In the 50's Thompson left the other station to play for WJIL.  Thompson loved the music on WJIL and he along with his band and younger brother Jeff  preformed their show on the legendary WJIL radio station.  A lot has changed at WJIL since the 50's and most people go to concerts to hear live music.  I thought I would share some old pictures of the Prairie Pioneers from the hillbilly-music.com website.  You find other information about WJIL on their site as well.   Enjoy the pictures and for the past 50 plus years, thanks for choosing WJIL.

In case you are wondering, here's a little bit
about me

Grew up:  I grew up in the home of The Fall Spoon River Drive and the Lewistown Indians.  Lewistown is located in Fulton county 1 hour north of Jacksonville.

School:
I graduated in 2004 from Western Illinois University in Macomb with a Bachelors Degree in Broadcasting.

Status:
I'm married to the most wonderful, beautiful, and intelligent women in the world.  Heather Ray (Grimm)

Lifetime Goals:
My wife and I hope to have a few children.  We plan on living and working in Jacksonville.

Greatest Accomplishments:
Getting through school was a challenge at times.  I earned my Bachelor's in Broadcasting degree back in 2004.  While at Western Illinois University in Macomb I received two awards.  The first one being the best on-air personality and the second one for Best Video PSA in 2004.  Now I feel like my greatest accomplishment is landing a full-time job as News Director and office assitance here at WJIL/WJVO.

Favorite Foods:
Everyone loves Pizza, so do I.  I also really enjoy biscuits and gravy, donuts, anything BBQ, and anything that's not good for you.  I really should change my bad eating habits.

Hobbies:
As an on-air radio personality you can imagine my biggest hobby is to listen to the radio.  We both love music so don't be surprised if you see us driving down Morton singing our favorite songs.  We like to go out and eat, walk, and hang out.  I also enjoy doing yard work and making repairs or updating our home.  I don't really like reality tv, but I do like sitcoms like Seinfield, Friends, Cheers, Home Improvement, etc.

Why Radio:
Ever since I was a young boy, I have always wanted to work in radio.  Every year it seemed like I got a radio for my birthday.  One year I remember getting an AM receiver for my sixth birthday.  I remember thinking WOW, they still make AM radios?

Contact:
Feel free to contact me anytime from 5am until 2pm at the radio station.  Our number is 245-5119, Our on-air phone number is 243-9586, or email me at wjil@mchsi.com.  We are working very hard to be your first choice on the radio and on-line.
